Torben Dyrved, who was born on 15 September 1939, has been painting since the age of 14 years.

I taught myself to paint.  I consider myself a colour specialist and think that it is important to focus on the values in nature, where I find inspiration for practically all my paintings.

The basis for my artistic expression can be found in the Danish art traditions from Immanuel Ipsen as well as Søndergaard and Hoppe to Havsteen Mikkelsen.  These were a generation of high quality painters, whom we do not see enough of these days.

I find inspiration while walking through the countryside and I use dreams and the sub-conscious as co-creative elements in order to find the primitive and confusing chaos that changes through a creative process into organised expression.

When I begin a painting, it is usually naturalistic.  This is why I place layer upon layer and simplify the motive until it becomes a pure abstraction.  The abstract painting is a piece of nature in itself.  I like to emphasize a simplified imagery through powerful colours. I find it pleasing and presumably mirrors my positive attitude to life.

I hope my colourful nature abstractions can move others and bring about a little happiness, tranquility and depth.  I think we need this more than ever.  By gosh, we are alive!
